Google Celebrated The 71st Anniversary Of The Wizard Of Oz


How darling!  Yesterday, Google replaced its normal logo with this colorful scene of Dorothy, Toto, The Scare Crow, The Tin Man and The Cowardly Lion all going down the ‘yellow brick road’ to see the Wizard of Oz.

This 1939 classic was nominated for several Academy Awards including ‘Best Picture’.  It was beat in that category by ‘Gone With The Wind’, but it won in the category of ‘Best Song’ with ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’, which also became a timeless classic.

The film, which was based off the children’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, had it’s Hollywood premiere on Aug. 15, 1939.The musical however was first debuted 3 days prior on Aug. 12 at the Strand Theatre in Oconomowoc, Wis. It starred Judy Garland who played Dorothy Gale, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr and Jack Haley.  It was directed by Victor Fleming.
